Dr. Shuling Yang is an Assistant Professor of Literacy in the School of Education at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Her research focuses on family literacy, literacy teacher education, and integrating artificial intelligence into education.
Dr. Yang’s work has been recognized with numerous national and international awards and grants. In 2025, she received the Mary Roe Equity in Literacy Education Award from the Association of Literacy Educators and Researchers (ALER). That same year, her lead-authored paper received the Outstanding Research Paper Award from the Journal of Digital Learning in Teacher Education, recognizing her pioneering work on using AI to prepare future teachers for emerging digital environments. In 2023, she was honored with the ELATE Research Initiative Award from the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and a Teacher Education Research Grant from ALER. In 2021, she received the AERA Division C Equity Grant, the NCTE Research Foundation Grant, and the NCTE Early Career Educator of Color Leadership Award. Earlier in her career, she was awarded the 2018 Jeanne Chall Research Fellowship from the International Literacy Association (ILA).
Her recent scholarship has also reached audiences beyond academic journals. Her article “A teen’s journey with ChatGPT: Agency, identity, and ethics in in- and out-of-school literacy activities” was featured on a podcast by the Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy. In addition, Towson University’s Multilingual Lab produced a video, released in August 2026, based on her 2025 Bilingual Research Journal article, “我抓在手里捏成棉花糖, 什么烦恼不能忘: Learning Mandopop lyrics to promote bilingualism and biliteracy development.”
Dr. Yang is actively engaged in scholarly service. At the Literacy Research Association (LRA), she serves as Area 7 program chair and as a member of the Edward Fry Book Award committee. She is also an elected member of NCTE’s Elementary Section Steering Committee. In addition, she serves on the editorial boards of the Bilingual Research Journal, the Journal of Digital Learning in Teacher Education, and the Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy.
