Biography

Dr. Keisha McIntosh Allen is a Postdoctoral Fellow for Faculty Diversity in the Department of Education. She received her EdD in Urban and Multicultural Education from Teachers College at Columbia University in 2015 and a MT in Secondary Education from Hampton University in 2002. Her research and teaching interests broadly focus on how issues of race, culture and identity influence teaching and learning for historically marginalized youth. Her current work examines the ways in which culturally relevant teaching practices, which recognizes students’ cultural identities and practices as assets within the classroom, mediate Black male youths’ academic achievement, identity-making, and social consciousness. Her work engages critical sociocultural theory, curriculum theory, critical race theory, critical multicultural education, and qualitative research methods.

She is currently preparing manuscripts from her dissertation, (In)visible Sons: Exploring the Enactment of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy with African American Adolescent Males as a Means to Increase Their Opportunity to Learn. The first article from this research centers the pedagogical content knowledge of Black male teachers by examining the racial literacy of a Black male teacher who utilizes culturally sustaining practices to support the social, academic, and cultural development of his Black male students. Prior to pursuing her doctorate degree, Dr. Allen taught Honors, AP and general English at a racially, ethnically, linguistically, and economically diverse high school in Fairfax County Virginia, a suburb of Washington, DC.Dr. Allen is teaching “Education in Cultural Perspective” during the Spring 2016 semester.
