Dr. Brandon Beck is an Assistant Professor of Secondary Social Studies Education at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). He completed his Ph.D. in Teaching and Learning at Clemson University before coming to UMBC. He teaches courses in social studies education and foundations for preservice teachers. His educational philosophy focuses on the nexus of the history of Black education, community-based pedagogies, and critical theorizations to disrupt historically inaccurate narratives surrounding Black education and deficit narratives among students of color. He also uses his experience and identity as a mentor and Black Male Social Studies educator to advocate for using culturally sustainable educational approaches in classrooms. He is currently investigating the potential historical impact of using oral history and life history methods within the social studies classroom as a tool for reparative social justice work in Black communities. Finally, his work adds to the historical record of Black education in his hometown of Greenville, South Carolina.
