Research Interests: Children’s writing development, effects of mandated instruction on elementary literacy development, literacy/art connections, children’s literature.Nancy Rankie Shelton, Professor, teaches graduate and undergraduate literacy courses. She has conducted research in urban elementary school settings in which she focused on the ways in which schools prepare literate, participatory citizens for the 21st century. She has created sustained partnerships with schools in Baltimore City, where she works with faculty and students to provide enriching, literate classroom environments and school-based professional development.

She is an active member in the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the Center for Expansion of Language and Thinking (CELT).

Her two most current publications are Literacy Policies and Practices in Conflict: Reclaiming Classrooms in Networked Times (2015, Routledge) which examines the tensions between federal policy and effective classroom practices and how those tensions alter the learning experiences of students, and 5-13: A Memoir of Love, Loss and Survival (2016, Garn Press) which shares her experience from the time of her husband’s diagnosis with stage IV cancer until his death (
